Chapter 24 — Going Home

At the water’s edge the tide was coming in, cold foam curling around my boots, the sky sweeping violet and amber and deep crimson.

Nia knelt and touched the water.

“Is Mama going to be everywhere now?” I knelt beside her, braced my cane against my thigh, and unthreaded the top of the urn.

“She’s going to be in the ocean, and in the breeze, and in the sun when it shines on your face — and right here,” I said, tapping her chest over her heart.

“She never really leaves us, Nia.
