I got into the driver’s seat and closed the door without another word.

During the drive home, Lily stayed unusually quiet. Normally she pointed out every truck, dog, traffic light, and funny-shaped cloud she saw. That afternoon she simply hugged her stuffed ladybug and stared out the window.

At a red light, I glanced into the rearview mirror. She was already looking at me.
