The Price of Silence
I did not tell her what I felt that night.
I thanked her for dinner, returned to my spreadsheet, and listened to her footsteps retreat down the hall.
Even now, I can remember the slight hesitation at the doorway, as though she had been waiting for me to say something more.
I had never considered myself a coward.
I had negotiated purchases in hostile boardrooms and defended investments that everyone else wanted to abandon.
Yet the possibility that Meredith might look me in the eye and tell me she had only married me for the rescue package terrified me more than any failed deal.
So I built walls that looked like courtesy.
I respected her space.
I never asked where she went when she visited her parents.
I maintained separate offices and separate calendars.
Whenever I wanted to ask her to stay home with me, I invented a reason for her to make her own plans instead.
She responded by becoming more careful.
If I came home late, she no longer waited with dinner.
If I passed her in the hallway, she smiled, but she stopped reaching for my hand.
I mistook her growing reserve for proof that our agreement had reached its natural end.
In September, I overheard my chief financial officer describing the rescue of her father’s factory as a costly concession.
