“Call the police. Don’t confront Brenda. Not yet.”

I had never called the police about my own home. Until that night, the thought would have seemed ridiculous.

We lived on a pleasant street with lawns and porch swings. I kept an extra key beneath a ceramic frog beside the door.

My daughter drew chalk flowers in the driveway. I had somehow mistaken the ordinary appearance of our life for proof that it was safe.

I called the nonemergency line and explained that my five-year-old had been injured and that a neighbor had preserved footage contradicting her caregiver’s account.

The dispatcher heard the details and sent an officer to the clinic.

Dr. Fletcher returned with written instructions about Hailey’s wound and a recommendation for an urgent eye assessment. He carefully explained what symptoms would require immediate emergency care, then asked if we had somewhere secure to stay.

“My sister’s house,” I said.
