“Either your mother leaves tonight,” Brandon said, jabbing his finger toward the door, “or you decide, right now, what matters more to you — her, or this marriage.”

And I did something that surprised us both.

I smiled.

“Thank you, Brandon,” I said.

He blinked, thrown.

“Why are you thanking me?” “Because,” I said, and my voice was very quiet and very clear, “you just showed me exactly how little this marriage was ever worth to you.”

I meant it, the thank-you, and not as sarcasm, though he heard it that way.

I meant it the way you thank a doctor for a diagnosis you didn’t want — because a hard truth, once you finally have it, is a gift, even when it arrives as the worst news of your life.
