I had one thing left, and I had been saving it, because my father also taught me that the strongest thing you have should be the last thing you show.

Two nights earlier, Flynn had taken a call in our kitchen, late, believing himself alone.

He did not know — I had half-forgotten it myself — that after a false glass-break alarm the previous winter, our home security system had been set to archive several minutes of audio whenever its sensors triggered, and that a door slammed hard enough that night to wake it.
