Three years later, the afternoon sun lay warm and gold across the courtyard of a small preschool in Charleston.

I was standing by the brick gate, straightening my jacket, when a little girl with a wild halo of brown curls came barreling across the yard and launched herself into my arms.

“Mommy!” Blythe shrieked, wrapping her arms tight around my neck.

I caught her and laughed and kissed her cheek.

“How was painting today, my love?”

“Look!” She dug a bright, dripping-with-color drawing out of her little backpack.
