Chapter 14 — Mistaking Patience for Weakness

“Simone — please!” Barrett came around the table toward me, and two security officers moved without being asked and put themselves in his path.

“You’re destroying my company!”

“No, Barrett,” I said, and I looked at him without any heat at all, because heat was the last thing the moment required.

“You destroyed yourself the second you mistook my patience for weakness.”

I have replayed that sentence in my head many times since, and I stand by every word of it, because it was the truest diagnosis I have ever given anyone.
