Chapter 19 — Evelyn, and Justin

Two of Brandon’s own family gave me, in different ways, the last pieces of the truth.

Evelyn asked to meet me, privately, at a quiet cafe, and there, over a cup of tea she never touched, she admitted that she had known about Cynthia for several months before that dinner.

Brandon had told her that our marriage was already over, that I was staying only for the pregnancy and the children, and that I was perfectly aware he was seeing someone else.

“Why did you believe that version?” I asked her, and I asked it gently, because I could see what it was costing her.

“Because he is my son,” she said, looking down at her tea, “and I wanted his explanation to be the true one.
