Chapter 14 — The Blue Box

Two days later — I learned this afterward, in pieces, some of it from Grayson himself much later — he drove to his mother’s estate, and Delphine met him at the dining table with a small blue velvet box in front of her.

Inside were my four unopened letters.

The first still bore a faint ring from a coffee cup, and my nervous handwriting, telling him I was pregnant with triplets, that I did not want to force a reconciliation or take anything from him — only that he should know, so that he could choose for himself what kind of father he wanted to be.

The second described a difficult ultrasound, and my fear, and my hope.
