Six months later, the morning sun comes through the windows of our new home, a small bright house near the coast, and lights up the yellow curtains that Leo and I picked out together, standing in the store holding up samples until we found exactly the right shade of sunshine.

I stand at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee, and around my neck, in the light where it belongs, is the sapphire — no longer locked in a velvet box in the dark, no longer too valuable to wear, no longer a thing my husband gave me and then gave away.
