Hartwell studied my medical file for a long time — a full twenty minutes, turning pages, going back, her face carefully neutral in the way of a person who has learned not to let a patient read the bad news off her expression before she is ready to say it.

And then her expression changed anyway, into something I could not immediately name, and now know was anger.

“Sloan,” she said.

“Who told you that you couldn’t conceive?”
