Arthur helped me hire a forensic accountant and an attorney — well, the way a man who has run large operations knows how to assemble the right people fast.

And that was when the second betrayal came up out of the books, the way rot comes up through a floor once you finally pull the carpet back.

Julian had not merely emptied our joint account the morning he threw me out.

That was almost the smallest of it.

For years, his company had been using my inherited funds — the money I had poured into it to save his payroll, the money he pretended not to know about — as undisclosed owner contributions.
