“You forfeited the right to ask me intimate questions,” I said, evenly, so that it carried, “the moment you forged my medical history to throw me away.”

His own lawyer’s head snapped around toward him.

“You did what?” the man hissed, in the strangled voice of an attorney realizing, in public, that his client has been lying to him too.

My attorney did not raise her voice.
