It is always easier.

A part of me understood, buckling my son into his seat, that if I pulled this thread I might not be able to stop, that the whole thing might come apart in my hands, and that a woman running on no sleep with two small children and a mortgage might not have the strength left to survive whatever was on the other end of it.

I pulled it anyway.

I am proudest of that, of all of it — not the microphone, not the lawyer, but the small, unglamorous decision, alone in a minivan, to believe the cold feeling in my chest instead of the soothing lie I had been trained to tell myself.
