It took two years to talk me into that outline and about ninety seconds, at a microphone, to step back out of it.

The prison had never actually had walls.

It had only had his voice, and the moment I stopped believing the voice, I discovered I had been free to leave the whole time.

Until his fortieth birthday, when he made the one miscalculation that gave me my life back.

Chapter 3 — The Pool Party

He threw himself a party — of course he did — a lavish afternoon pool party in the backyard I paid the mortgage on, filled with friends and relatives and the executive colleagues he liked to impress.

I spent the morning cooking and setting up and wrangling the children, and then, because it was a pool party and hiding indoors would have drawn more comment than appearing, I put on a swimsuit and stepped out onto the patio.
