“Already pregnant,” I said again, evenly, so there could be no mistaking it.

“While you were telling me I wasn’t built for motherhood.

While you were signing your name and walking out the door.

I was carrying our daughter the whole time.”

He looked at Lily then, really looked, and I watched him begin to do the arithmetic that any fool could do, and I watched it frighten him.

I took my daughter’s hand in mine and held it, and I kept going, because I had waited five years to say the rest of it and I was not going to be stopped now.
