They looked at her the way you look at something you have found on the bottom of your shoe.

She turned back to Mike, mascara streaking down through her flawless makeup.

“Mike,” she said.

“Please.

Don’t do this to me here.”

Mike did not answer her.

He had already turned his face away, toward the pavilion, toward the corner where his daughter sat swinging her legs and eating cake.

“Get out of my sight,” he said, and his voice was flat and hollow and dead.
