“Yes,” he said.

“I lied to you both.” He turned to my son.

“Jonah, I made a terrible choice.

I thought you were grown-up enough to manage on your own for a few days.”

And Jonah looked at him with that awful, quiet, too-old steadiness and asked the one question there was no surviving.

“Then why didn’t you leave Toby home too?”
