It’s specificity.

A vague liar can wriggle — it happened so fast, I’m not sure exactly what she grabbed. You cannot corner a man who refuses to commit.

But Ronan had no reason yet to be vague; in his mind he was winning, and a winning man embellishes, because the details make the story vivid and the vividness makes it believed.

So I invited him to be vivid.

I asked him to be exact, and I kept my face empty while I did it, giving him nothing to read, and he walked straight into it, painting his imaginary poker in loving detail — the length, the point, the black handle — nailing his own story to a specific object in a specific room, an object I already knew did not exist.

Every word he added was another nail.
