He Was Trying to Come Back
Chapter 11 — The Porch Light Goes Off
News of Andrew’s rescue moved through the neighborhood even faster than the accusations had.
The woman who’d recorded Natalie carrying Ella from the house watched the rescue footage on her phone and covered her mouth.
The man who had called Andrew a monster crossed the street and quietly switched off the porch light that had burned for four days.
No apology could undo what Ella had lived through, and the crash didn’t erase the danger of leaving a small child alone, even briefly.
But it changed the central truth. Andrew hadn’t abandoned her. He had been trapped a few miles away, injured, desperately trying to get back to the daughter who’d never stopped waiting.
At the hospital, Natalie sat by Ella’s bed with Buddy resting near the pillow.
