Hello, Dad
Everywhere we went, when strangers spoke to us, when a waitress or a nurse or a passerby addressed us as the pair we appeared to be, Julian would smile with an unmistakable, shining pride and say the same three words.
“This is my daughter.” He said it every time as though it were the most extraordinary privilege in the world, as though the words themselves were a small miracle he could not quite get over being allowed to say.
And here is the thing I have to confess, the thing that still amazes me when I look back: I was happy.
Happier than I had been in years.
