There was a stack of photographs, old ones, their colors faded to the soft yellows and ambers of another decade.

There was a thick journal bound in worn leather, its pages swollen with years of writing.

There was an official document, folded once, that I could see even without opening it was a certified birth certificate.

And there was a single small key, the kind that opens a safe-deposit box in the vault of a bank, cool and heavy against the velvet lining.

I looked at these four objects for a long moment without touching them, the way you look at something you sense is about to change you.
