Hello, Dad
For twenty-two years that word had been a blank, an absence, a locked room in the middle of me.
And now, in the space of a single held breath, the blank was filled, and it was not a name in the abstract, a distant figure I would never meet.
It was filled with a face I knew.
It was filled with a laugh I had heard, a hand I had held, a man I had already, without knowing it, come to love.
Most people who lose a parent to distance and secrecy, if they ever find them at all, find a stranger, and must begin the slow uncertain work of learning to love someone who is family only on paper.
