Her Place Will Never Be Beneath Anyone
It was a comfortable story and it required nothing of them.
But a comfortable story only survives as long as the person it’s told about cooperates by staying small, and Marisela had stopped cooperating the moment she said no under the chandelier.
Now she walked into their drawing room carrying her daughter, calm and upright and entirely unafraid, and the mismatch between the woman in front of them and the woman in their heads was so plain that even the slowest of the relatives felt it, a low prickling wrongness they could not name.
They had been told she was beneath them.
She did not move like a person who was beneath anyone.
She moved like a person who had walked into far worse rooms than this one and walked back out of them, which was exactly the truth, and the truth has a way of showing in the body no matter how hard a family works to talk itself out of seeing it.
