Marisela never posted a word of it online.

She was asked to, more than once — a cousin who’d turned against Sabetha offered to “expose the whole thing,” a friend told her the internet would eat the story alive and make her a hero.

She declined every time, without drama and without lecturing anyone about it.

She had no interest in being a hero and less than none in retaliation.

Public revenge would have made the story about Sabetha, about the collar, about the outrage — a spectacle for strangers to feed on for a week and forget.

Marisela wanted something both smaller and far more complete than that.
