He took out a thick, sealed white envelope and set it right in the middle of the table.

“What’s inside?” I asked.

“The emergency petition and the proposed custody order,” Marcus said, laying his yellow pad beside it.

“Judge Miller reviewed the medical affidavit and the forged signature in his chambers at seven o’clock.”

“Did he sign it?” I asked.

“He set an emergency hearing for eight thirty tomorrow morning in Room 3B,” Marcus said.

“That’s the exact moment Grace goes into the operating room.”

“Does Daniel know what’s in that envelope?” I asked.
