Lucas sat beside me, his right sneaker scuffing against the rubber molding along the baseboard in a steady, scraping rhythm while he held my phone in both hands.

“This news article says Caldwell Defense Solutions just won a forty-million-dollar state security contract,” Lucas said.

“Put the phone away, Lucas,” I said.

“There’s a picture of him standing in front of an airplane,” Lucas said.

“He’s wearing a tailored navy suit and a gold signet ring.

He looks like Henry, except his hair is shorter.”

I took the phone out of his hands and laid it face down on my lap.

“He lives two hours away in Aspen,” Lucas said, scuffing the floor with his sneaker again.
