“He didn’t just take eighteen hundred dollars from you,” Nathaniel said, setting his pencil down on the wood.

“He took twenty-four hundred from Miller, three thousand from Jackson, and eighteen hundred from the framing crew.”

Martha leaned over the bench, her hand resting on the edge of the blue paper.

“How much in total?”

“Forty-one thousand two hundred dollars across eleven workers over two years,” Nathaniel said.

Martha looked down at her daughter, who was carefully blowing blue crayon dust off her drawing.

“He told the whole crew Whitmore Construction was cutting our pay rates,” Martha said, her voice dropping to a low whisper.
