I Am Standing
It is a thing worth naming, because we do not name it enough: that a wronged person’s courage in bringing the truth forward is only half of what is required.
The other half is a community with the integrity to receive it.
I brought the truth.
The Vances honored it.
And it took both, together, to set my daughter and me free.
Chapter 14 — Safe and Well
I spent that night in the master guest suite, in a bed so warm and so soft that I wept a little into the pillow, not from grief, but from the sheer unfamiliar relief of being cared for, of being safe, after so long carrying everything alone.
And the next morning, exactly as Arthur had promised, his driver took me to the clinic, where a kind obstetrician examined me thoroughly, and listened to the baby’s heartbeat, and measured, and checked, and finally looked up at me with a reassuring smile and told me the words I had most needed to hear: that despite the cold, and the stress, and everything I had endured on that platform and in that vestibule, my daughter was healthy, and strong, and exactly where she should be.
