I Am Standing
If revenge had been the point, I would have made different choices; I would have confronted Julian, or gone to the tabloids, or found some more spectacular way to hurt him.
What I actually cared about, underneath all the strategy, was two things only, and they were both sitting in that warm examination room with me.
The first was my daughter’s safety.
And the second was my own.
Everything else, the frozen accounts and the terminated job and the trust and the annulment, was real, and I do not pretend I took no satisfaction in it, but it was all downstream of those two things, all in service of building a world in which my child and I would be safe from the man who had tried to harm us both.
