Diane straightened the nearest wineglass and would not meet my eyes.
The caterer beside her was holding six white plates against his chest, waiting for Diane to decide where they belonged.
“Not there,” she said.
“Those go on the long table.”
He turned toward the dining room, and I picked up my Army duffel before he could brush against it.
Diane glanced at the bag.
“You could have called from the road.”
“I was at the house.”
Her hand stopped over a stack of folded napkins.
“You arrived already?”
“Five minutes ago.”
She looked toward the open doorway, then back at me.
“I did not hear you.”
“I came through the side entrance.”
The caterer carried the plates away.
Beyond him, three women in dark dresses were laughing near the dining-room windows, each holding a glass of wine.
Diane lowered her voice.
“We have guests tonight.”
