I have had to teach my mother, slowly, over these eight months, that this was never a kindness she owed me — that a child would infinitely rather carry the hard truth of a parent’s suffering than be spared it at the cost of that suffering continuing.

She is learning it.

But it is a hard thing to unlearn, the reflex of a lifetime, the deep conviction that your pain is the acceptable price of everyone else’s peace.

It nearly cost her her life.

And it very nearly worked.
