What she did not know was that the system maintained an entirely separate, independent backup in the cloud — one that continued recording regardless of the local settings, and that could only be accessed with administrative credentials that she did not have and had never thought to ask for.

I will not describe in detail what was on that footage, because my mother is a private person and it is her humiliation, not mine to broadcast.

It is enough to say that from three nights before I came home, in clear high definition, the cloud backup had recorded my wife doing to my mother the very things my mother had just described to me — the grabbing, the shoving, the locking of the pantry latch — and that on the recording, in Wendy’s own clear voice, you could hear her say to my mother the sentence that I think will define her, legally and morally, for the rest of her life: You’ll eat when I decide you’ve earned it.

I watched it once, all the way through, because I owed it to my mother to know all of what she had endured, and because I would need to know it to make sure it was punished.

And then I closed the laptop, and I sat in the dark for a while.

That was the moment, watching that footage, that I stopped seeing Wendy as my wife.
