I made a decision in the space of about three seconds.

I would tell my family about the settlement.

I would give them one true detail about it — the amount, the shine, the thing that would make their eyes light up.

And I would leave out the single fact that mattered most, and I would let their own greed do the rest of the work for me.

I let the anger drop out of my face.
