Not once in four years.

I trusted my mother completely.

I trusted my brother.

And most of all, past any possibility of doubt, I trusted that my wife was safe and cared for and loved by the people I had left her with.

That trust was the beam I had built my whole exile on.

And I was standing behind a fence watching it rot in front of me, in real time, one broken plate at a time.

I need to explain what that trust was made of, because to a stranger it might look like foolishness, and it was not foolishness.
