He looked terrible.
His eyes were sunken, his nurse’s scrubs were wrinkled as though he had slept in them, if he had slept at all, and he had the gray, scraped-thin look of a person being worn down by something he cannot name.
He was Rebecca’s husband, and in all the years I had known him I had exchanged perhaps a hundred sentences with him, always pleasant, always at the edges of family gatherings, two people who occupied similar positions in the same family and had never compared notes.
He looked at me, and something in my face — some residue of the dining room, maybe — made him decide, right there, to say a thing he had plainly been carrying for a while.
“Valerie.” He lowered his voice, glancing back toward the house.
“Something’s really wrong with Rebecca’s medical debts.
