The floor did not literally move, but something underneath me gave way, some structure I had stood on my whole life without knowing it was there.

I did not go in.

I did not push the door open and scream, though a version of me wanted to.

I backed away down the corridor, slowly, the way you back away from something you do not want to wake, and on my way to the elevator I dropped the entire fifteen-hundred-dollar basket into a trash bin, and I did not slow down to watch it land.
