Rebecca stood up so abruptly that the baby startled and began to cry, and a nanny materialized from the edge of the room and lifted the infant gently out of her trembling arms, and I was glad of it, glad the child was out of the center of what was coming.
“Vance,” Rebecca whispered, her composure gone entirely.
“Do something.”
Vance turned on me, and the charm gone from his face now, burned off, leaving something underneath it I had lived with for years and never once looked at directly.
