Chapter 4 — Signatures That Weren’t Mine

That night, alone in the house I still shared with my husband, I did what I should have done years before.

I pulled my own credit report, and I read it the way I read a company’s books before we decide whether to lend it fifty million dollars.

There were three credit cards on it that I had never applied for.

There was a corporate loan application, seventy-five thousand dollars, on which I was listed as a primary personal guarantor.

And there were my signatures, on documents I had never seen — except that they were not my signatures.
