I Canceled Seven Hundred Dollars After Christmas Night Left My Daughter Alone in the Dark
“Don’t make a scene on Christmas Eve, Clara.”
“You shut a six-year-old in a dark closet?” I said.
“It’s a pantry, not a dark closet,” Caroline said, letting out a quick sigh.
“There’s plenty of light coming in under the door.”
Margaret picked up her fork and laid a slice of cold ham on her own china plate.
“Sit back down, Clara,” Margaret said.
“We’ll say grace now, and once dinner is over, she can come out and apologize to her aunt.”
I walked away from the mahogany table without a word.
