Chapter 4 — The Nursery

Together, the three of us built the nursery.

We painted the walls a soft, gentle green — not blue, not pink, because they wanted the room to be the baby’s own regardless of anything else.

We set up a beautiful white crib in the corner, and Ethan assembled it himself, cursing quietly at the instructions while Lauren and I laughed at him.

And above the crib we hung a little mobile strung with tiny felt stars, and Lauren stood underneath it for a long time after we finished, just looking up, her hand resting on the rail of a crib that was, at last, actually going to hold her child.
