Chapter 17 — What Is Hard to Forgive

For a while, Lauren just held her daughter and cried, and none of us spoke, and the room slowly filled with something that had been absent from it for a very long time.

And then Lauren lifted her head and looked at her husband, still standing wrecked in the doorway, and she said the thing that I have thought about most of everything said that day, because it was so much wiser than her fury, and so much harder.

She told him that someday, she thought, she would probably be able to forgive him for what he did in the hospital room.
