I did not flinch.

I did not show fear on scaffolding or across a negotiating table.

I had trained myself, over decades, to feel very little and to reveal even less, because in my world feeling was a liability and revealing it was worse, and the men who rose were the men who could sit unmoved while everything around them shook.

I was proud of that hardness.

I thought it was the core of me, the engine of everything I had built.
