His hands were shaking. “Please, Mom. Just let me in.”
I stepped aside at once. After I locked the door, he looked straight at me. “Don’t tell Dad I’m here.”
I stared at the baby. “Are you telling me this is your child?”
He flinched. “My child? Mom — you don’t know anything about your husband.”
The words tightened something in my stomach.
I asked him to sit, but instead he gently placed the baby in my arms and opened the suitcase on the living-room floor.
