He had put our son out on the street with a duffel bag and a noon deadline while secretly keeping another household for twelve years.
He had frowned over the price of a birthday cake, counted every dollar I spent, questioned every small thing I bought for our home — all while paying another woman’s rent and a second daughter’s tuition without a flicker of guilt.
I understood, finally, standing in that dining room with his second family spread across the table, that the peace I had worked so hard to keep had never actually existed.
There had only ever been fear, and obedience, and Richard’s control, and my own long silence holding it all in place.
