I actively taught her, in that moment, not to try again.

I told her to stop making things difficult for my relationship.

I told her, in effect, that her truth was an inconvenience to my happiness, and that the correct thing for her to do was to be quiet and absorb whatever was being done to her so that the adults could get on with their lives.

Think about what that does to a child.

It teaches her that speaking up is punished, that the powerful adults will side with each other, that her pain is less important than the comfort of the grown-ups around her.
