“You all right?” he asked.

“I’m a little tired.”

“Long week.”

“Yes.”

I turned toward the window.

Atlanta moved past in familiar pieces: a traffic light, a restaurant we liked, a corner where he always complained about the lane markings.

I knew the comments he would make before he made them.

That familiarity unsettled me more than if he had behaved strangely.
