The opposite of love is not hate.

Hate is love that has turned rancid but is still, unmistakably, a bond; the person who hates their ex-husband is still bound to him by a rope, merely a rope that burns instead of comforts.

The true opposite of love, the thing that actually severs the bond, is indifference — the quiet, complete cessation of caring in any direction at all.

And indifference cannot be forced or performed; it can only be arrived at, slowly, when the person genuinely no longer occupies your inner life.
