Spring arrived with the smell of wet earth and the sound of birds gathering in the maple tree outside our kitchen.

Chloe had gained strength, and though she still needed support on difficult days, she was sleeping better and spending more time outdoors.

We found a secondhand crib and put it in the room beside hers.

Tessa helped assemble it, reading the instructions while I insisted I could figure out the screws by looking at them.

“It’s a crib, not a ship,” Tessa said.

“Please follow the manual.”
